Elastic Bracelet Care
February 28, 2025We make and sell a lot of crystal chip bracelets here, so we’ve come up with a few hints and tips for better care of them. All of them are made with elastic, which is the weakest part of the bracelet.
When you put it on, try not to over stretch the elastic. It’s tempting to use the other hand to stretch the elastic as wide as possible into a triangle and stretch it over your hand. Instead, try ‘rolling’ the beads over your hand when putting it on. Also take your bracelets off the same way. The majority of bracelet repairs I get are are because of overstretched elastic, or someone saying that the crystals just pinged everywhere when they put them on.
Look for natural wear and tear. This can be fraying and looseness, especially with the coloured elastics. The clearer nylon elastic is stronger, so the wear and tear to look out for is saggyness.
Try not to get it wet. Elastic will degrade on exposure to water, soap, perfume, moisturisers etc. It is always best to take them off before swimming, showering, handwashing, and to moisturise or applying anything to the skin. This will help the longevity of the elastic.
Take them off in the gym or when working with things that can hook onto the bracelets. Quite a few people get bracelets caught on things at the gym. Even if your bracelet doesn’t break at this point, other stresses on this already stretched bracelet will cause it to break later.
Lastly, when choosing and looking at bracelets in the shop, please ask if you want one taken off the display. We are more than happy to help you through the process of choosing the right bracelet. If you would like to do this yourself, please slide the bracelets off to get to the bracelet you’d like to see, and refrain from stretching the bracelet over all of the others to get it off.
The elastic in the bracelet should last about a year. So what happens when an elastic bracelet does break? We regularly run workshops on bracelet making during school holidays to teach people how to make bracelets, and more importantly how to repair a bracelet when it does break. If you’d like to jump onto one, you can book HERE.
We don’t normally do repairs on bracelets for free unless it has broken within 30 days of purchase. In the unlikely event that it was faulty when you purchased it, you have up to six months to bring it in for a repair. You’ll need to check that you are happy with the repair at this point as you’ll only have 30 days to bring it back if it breaks again.
